What to Wear for Spring / Summer Engagement Photos

engaged couple poses under large oak tree on USC's Horseshoe

One of the most commonly asked questions I get is, “What should we wear for our engagement photos?”. Sometimes it’s difficult to explain what to wear for an engagement session, especially when I don’t know a couple’s personalities that well yet.  Some girls are comfortable in heels, whereas others would prefer to wear flats. Some guys are comfortable in a blazer and slacks, whereas others feel better in a t-shirt and Chucks.

Well, stress no more, because I’ve put together some tips to help you prepare for your engagement session, as well as an illustrated style guide, which you can access by clicking the button at the bottom of this post!

Tips on what to wear for your engagement session:

  • Layers are flattering and allow your personality and style to show through.

Her layers allowed for two very different looks, without taking too long to change an entire ensemble!

  • Bright hues in small doses are a fun bit of pizzazz (think scarf or hat).

The blue in her skirt matches his shirt perfectly, but isn’t overwhelming.

  • Go for neutral colored outfits that complement each other without being the same.

  • Fitted clothes translate better to photographs than baggy ones. Right now, I’m seeing tulle skirts with fitted tops that are flattering and feminine on everyone, when paired with great heels!

Make sure your clothes fit well! These two nailed their outfits all the way down to their shoes, and it makes this image perfect!

  • Sleeveless shirts, turtlenecks and clothes with logos/writing on them don’t provide timeless looks like more traditional clothing choices will.
  • Try to avoid very large patterns, as they can really take away from the real focus of the image — YOU!

You can never go wrong with colors you know work on you, and classic, timeless clothing.

It’s nearly impossible to find knowledgeable people about this topic, however, you sound like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks|

The number of times I had to hold my face because my cheeks hurt from laughing is more than I can count; Haley & Logan are such a sweet couple, with a really amazing love story. Even greater than their story is the love of everyone around them! What a fantastic wedding with some amazing families and - of course - a great vendor team!

I would love to hear your own opinion on this quote. It perfectly captures the dilemma of wanting to express oneself through fashion, yet sometimes also feeling most comfortable in understated, classic styles. I personally have vascillated between wanting to be the most print-tastic, colorful woman in the world to feeling best in a wardrobe of blacks and neutrals, with understated jewelry. I believe that our sense of style can go through phases and evolve with time.

That's why, when you first inquire with me, I send you a short questionnaire to get a sense of your range of styles. This helps both of us to be on the same page for all of your sessions - whether it's engagements, bridals, or of course, the wedding day. I'm here to help you capture your unique essence and style in the most authentic and beautiful way possible.
Magical wedding day portraits don’t just happen. Magical wedding day portraits don’t just happen. It’s my job to craft these magical moments — to give you a short, intentional pause that allows you to take a deep breath together, escaping the whirlwind of thoughts and external chaos. These are the moments where your love shines brightest, when we will work together to paint a picture of the most connected and blissful moments from your wedding day.

In the time leading up to your wedding, make sure you’re collaborating with your planner and me to build this time in seamlessly. We love to prioritize this time, because we all have the same goal: an amazing wedding day celebrating your love, with timeless photos that transport you back to those feelings a million times over.
Your wedding day details should represent your sto Your wedding day details should represent your story and your wedding day, but it’s not always easy to curate them as perfectly as Macy and @alexandramadisonweddings did here! Make sure to ask your photographer for input on which details should be photographed, even if you purchase a few items that exist only for these photos (wax seals and unique ring boxes, anyone). I can’t even put into words how much I love photographing these crucial storytelling items.
